Re: Implants for Overdenture Retention: Immediate Insertions Treatment Compared to Delayed Insertion Treatment,” Oral Health, October, 2002

I have had the good fortune to work with Dr. Somborac and would like to comment on the significant implications of his article entitled, “Implants for Overdenture Retention: Immediate Insertions Treatment Compared to Delayed Insertion Treatment.”

I have always dreaded full clearance cases, lying awake the night before about the inapt treatment that I was able to provide. Immediate implant treatment following full clearances is a paradigm shift in dentistry. The quality of life is significantly improved with implants, as this article suggests, be it 1, 2 or 3 implants. Immediate implant treatment should the choice of treatment for these patients.

Implant dentistry at its onset was touted as a very complex procedure and was further complicated by a myriad of screws and bolts. The Tenax implant system is a great solution with only nine pieces. It really offers us a simple solution to offer to our patients, to help them to be able to smile, bite and talk normally. Full clearance cases should ideally be treated with immediate implant dentistry — we should always help our patients, not cripple them!
