The International Dental Exhibition and Meeting (IDEM) Singapore 2010 drew to a close today, with registered participation from 6,057 dental traders and practitioners including dentists and dental clinicians.

Cementing its position as the premier dental showcase in the region, IDEMSingapore 2010 brought together participants from 54 countries in a four-dayevent that delivered the cutting edge in dental technology, techniques andpatient treatment.

“Once again, IDEM Singapore has successfully brought the latest innovations and emerging technologies from around the globe to Asia’s dental community. The response from participants and exhibitors has been encouraging, and we are proud to have facilitated the fruitful interactions and networking that will lay the foundation for future collaborations,” said Mr Michael Dreyer, Vice President, Asia Pacific, Koelnmesse.

Creating powerful connections for the dental business in Asia

IDEM Singapore 2010 continued to be the platform for businesses in the dental trade to connect and expand their network in the region.

Mr Sthen Boisen, General Manager South Asia, KaVo Dental Asia-Pacific Pte Ltd said, “IDEM Singapore 2010 has proven to be a more successful outing for us as compared to the 2008 event. By the second day, we had already achieved the same results as we did for the entire show in 2008. We are seeing positive response for the range of products we showcased. We have already secured at least three major projects and we’re expecting to bring these to fruition in the next three to six months!”

Visitors to IDEM Singapore 2010 also benefited from the wide-range of products,  technologies and innovations on display. Dr Ma Judith Del Rosario-Yap, COO of Exceldent, Philippines, commented, “I will not hesitate to recommend IDEM Singapore to my business associates. It’s been very productive for me as I was able to meet up with key suppliers over the three days.”

“IDEM Singapore 2010 has surpassed the results of 2008. It is a good platform for networking, allowing me to connect with key contacts from a wide range of dental segments. I will certainly be back in 2012.” Mr Tran Van Thuan, President of Denmedico, Vietnam.

Spotlight on growing dental trends and opportunities

With 352 exhibitors from 31 countries across the globe, IDEM Singapore 2010 provided visitors with a truly global showcase of the trends shaping the world of dentistry. Three key technologies were most prevalent on the exhibition floor, signalling the growing opportunities in these segments.

Digital imaging technology

Several 3D conebeam computed tomography (CT) systems were on display by established names in digital imaging, such as KaVo, Sirona and Vatech.

“IDEM Singapore 2010 has been a fantastic platform for Vatech to enhance the awareness about our products and expertise in the field of digital imaging technologies. Our bigger presence this year signals our commitment to advance our presence in the region,” said Mr Eugene Quah, General Manager, Vatech Asia HQ Pte Ltd.

Ultrasonic surgical techniques

Ultrasonic bonecutting surgery is seeing increased popularity as the technology of choice for cranio-maxillo-facial surgery, delivering greater precision and safety to patients. Piezoelectric surgical techniques are one of a range of cutting-edge procedures presented extensively at the IDEM Singapore 2010 exhibition. The Acteon Group introduced its second generation dental surgery and implantology unit, while Silfradent launched its Surgybone device which guarantees enhanced control for dental clinicians.

Implant and aesthetics dentistry

With the advent of new materials and techniques for bone augmentation and soft tissue management, dental implants are now indicated for a broad spectrum of treatment.

As a sign of implant dentistry’s growing importance in Asia’s dental market, the big names in implant dentistry, such as Nobel Biocare, Osstem, Bicon and Straumann, were all present at IDEM Singapore 2010. Straumann introduced its new product, a unique new implant material thatpromises enhanced flexibility in treatment option, better predictability of outcome and higher efficiency for dentists.

A well-rounded view of the practice of dentistry

Over 1,044 participants attended the IDEM Singapore 2010 Scientific Conference, which featured 18 international thought leaders in their respective fields of expertise.

Apart from new techniques and technologies, IDEM Singapore 2010 also brought to the fore new protocols in patient treatment. Dr Ricardo Mitrani presented a session discussing the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to patient treatment in contemporary dentistry. Commenting on the IDEM Singapore 2010 Scientific Conference, Dr Mitrani said, “There is certainly an outstanding lineup of speakers and dentistry educators. The agenda was well thought out and covers a wide range of topics. I saw great interest among the participants in the finer details in aesthetically driven treatment options.”

Dr Roland Glauser who spoke about choosing the optimal treatment strategy for implant placement and restoration said, “I was pleased to be part of the Scientific Conference alongside a high caliber of speakers, covering many relevant areas of interest in dentistry. I was also impressed by the diverse range of dental professionals that the conference was able to attract.”

The Consumer Seminar, which took place on the last day of the show, was also well received. With topics such as The relative advantages and disadvantages of implants, What you should ask your dentists about implants and the intriguing, Teeth-in-an-hour, participants went away with valuable insights into the challenges and limitations of dental implant procedures.

“The Consumer Education Forum aims to update the public beyond the basic principles of good oral care. The overwhelming response we saw for this forum reinforces our believe that there is a high level of enthusiasm from the public to learn more about the benefits of advanced dental treatments for overall oral health,” said Dr Lewis Lee, President, Singapore Dental Association.

Enhancing professionalism in dental trade

The inaugural Let’s Talk Business seminar at IDEM Singapore 2010 also registered keen participation from the industry.

Dr Wilson Goh, Managing Director of GPA Holdings, discussed the adoption of technology in the delivery of dental treatments in his session Management of Advanced Dental Technology. Gathering participants from Australia, Cambodia, Phillipines and Vietnam, among others, Dr Goh shared insights into the role of technology in growing the dental practice and how dental practitioners can upgrade their business through proper assimilation of technology in their practice.

“The introduction of the Let’s Talk Business seminar is a great addition to the IDEM Singapore program. Technology is a topic that is deep in our hearts but we seldom get the opportunity to discuss this with our peers. There is a high level of interest from participants, who came from across the region, on how they can leverage technology to transform the delivery of dental treatments,” Dr Goh commented.

Dr Vivek Shukla, who presented the session Dentistry Tourism in Asia Pacific said, “Dentistry is truly a global business but the challenges differ slightly among various regions. Events such as IDEM Singapore provides a platform for us to exchange ideas and share perspectives on what’s happening in different countries. Dental professionals today are increasingly looking at innovative ways to grow their practice. The Let’s Talk Business seminar is the perfect platform to drive discussions on the business of dentistry.”

Staying relevant to the future of the dental community

“IDEM Singapore 2010 has been another successful outing. The combination of the scientific conference and trade exhibition provided visitors with the full breadth and depth of knowledge to keep updated on the emerging trends and technology in the global dental market. I am confident that IDEM Singapore 2012 will continue to see such strong support from the dental community,” said Mr Dreyer.

IDEM Singapore 2012 has already received encouraging response, with many exhibitors and visitors keen on returning. Several top names in the industry have also confirmed their participation in the event. Focusing on “Advances and Controversies”, speakers already confirmed for the IDEM Singapore 2012 Scientific Conference include Dr Dennis Tarnow from the Columbia School of Medicine, New York as well as Dr Michel Magne and Dr Pascal Magne from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

“IDEM Singapore continues to remain relevant to dental practitioners in Singapore and the region by offering a platform for continuing professional development and product knowledge updates. This year the scientific committee of IDEM Singapore 2010 has kept the content contemporary and relevant with its focus on dental implantology and aesthetic dentistry. The precongress courses and the master classes are new additions that have been well received by the congress attendees. In 2012, we will consider incorporating other topics such as dental materials, orthodontics or oral medicine, as well as a larger number of hands-on workshops,” said Dr Lee.
