Biomedical engineering is fastest growing field; dental jobs offer many new spots for 2-year degrees

72 percent: Projected growth in jobs for biomedical engineers from 2008 to 2018, the fastest growing occupation. Education: bachelor’s degree. New jobs: 11,600. Median pay in 2008: $77,400.

53 percent: Projected growth in jobs for network systems and data communications analysts, the second-fastest growing category. Education: bachelor’s degree. New jobs: 155,800. Median pay: $71,100.

50 percent: Projected growth in home health aides, sharpest increase for an occupation categorized as requiring only short-term on-the-job training. New jobs: 460,900. Median pay: $20,460.

40 percent: Projected growth in jobs for medical scientists, tops for occupations with doctoral degrees. New jobs: 44,200. Median pay: $72,590. 

36 percent: Projected growth in jobs for dental hygienists, dental assistants and veterinary technicians, sharing the lead for occupations with an associate’s degree. Median pay: $66,570 for dental hygienists, $32,380 for dental assistants and $28,900 for veterinary technicians. New jobs: dental hygienists, 62,900; dental assistants, 105,600; veterinary technicians, 28,500.
