Out of the blue
Abstract: Introduction: The purpose of this study was twofold: to compare cyclic fatigue resistance between files of differing material approaches of similar dimensions; and to determine the effects of taper on cyclic fatigue resistance. The comparison included two standard NiTi files, an M-Wire rotary file, a twisted file and a new proprietary “Blue Wire” file prototype ( with a titanium oxide layer). Methods: Fifteen ISO size #25, 0.04 and 0.06 tapered files of Vortex Blue (prototype), ProFile Vortex, ProFile, Twisted File, and EndoSequence were mounted in a cyclic fatigue testing apparatus (angle of rotation of 60 degrees, a radius of curvature of 5 mm). The number of revolutions to fracture were recorded and analyzed using one-way analysis of variances. Results: The Vortex Blue files were statistically superior to all file types (p < 0.05), while the ProFileVortex files were better than all other files tested (p < 0.001). There was no significant difference between the Twisted File and the ProFile in the 0.06 taper, but both were significantly better than the EndoSequence files (p < 0.001). For the 0.04 taper files, there was no significant difference between the Twisted File and the ProFile or between the ProFile and the EndoSequence. A significant difference was determined between the 0.04 and 0.06 tapered files for all file types for the number of revolutions until failure (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Vortex with M-Wire and the Vortex Blue prototype with “Blue Wire” have a significantly higher resistance to cyclic fatigue than other types of NiTi files. The Vortex Blue performed significantly better than the Profile Vortex. For all file types, 0.04 tapered instruments were significantly more resistant to cyclic fatigue compared to the corresponding 0.06 taper files.
