The Dawson Academy Introduces New Curriculum on Emerging Health Care Services in Dentistry

The Dawson Academy introduced a new dental continuing education curriculum based on emerging health care services for dentists during a live webinar Wednesday, Nov. 28.

This new curriculum, called the Dental Medical Track, will teach dentists how to provide greater services and integrate their care with the whole medical community.

Joan Forrest, CEO and President of The Dawson Academy, opened the webinar by stating, “Currently, there is a tremendous amount of interest in Dentistry’s role in patient health and wellness.”

Additionally, she stated, “Our founder, Dr. Peter Dawson, has always encouraged dentists to go beyond being a “tooth doctor” to become a “physician of the masticatory system. With the increasing understanding of the relationship between oral health and systemic health, his directive is particularly timely.”

“In an era of exploding medical knowledge, patients spend more time with their dentist and hygienist than with their primary care provider, placing dentistry in a new and unique position to provide critical health care services,” said Dr. DeWitt Wilkerson, Director of the Dental Medical Track at The Dawson Academy.

During the webinar, Wilkerson introduces ways to offer better patient care by providing services, such as disease prevention, advanced cancer screenings, salivary diagnostics, and sleep studies.

The Dental Medical Curriculum, consisting of one dental seminar and two hands-on courses, will also cover topics such as bite relationship problems, Temporomandibular Disorder, airway issues, Cardiovascular risk, and more. These courses will teach attendees how to provide these additional services to patients immediately upon returning to their practices.

In the new dental seminar, “Complete Dentists in the 21st Century,” participants will learn from Wilkerson and Dr. Steven Masley, MD, about the opportunity to expand their range of care by offering specific services, such as treating bite relationship, TMJ and airway problems.

The goal of the hands-on course, “Evaluation, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Sleep Disorders,” is to equip each participant with the knowledge and tools to immediately begin integrating Dental Sleep Medicine into their complete care practice.

TMD Patients: Diagnosis & Treatment” teaches dentists how to systematically evaluate, diagnose and treat patients exhibiting signs and symptoms of TMD. This dental course also has a significant focus on occlusal splint therapy.
