What Makes Your Day Great?

What makes your day great? Here it is, put simply: What does a day at work look like that has you pulling out of the parking lot saying “What an amazing day!”

I’m fortunate to say I grew up in dental. During my nine years with Dr. Nick Johnson, an Orthodontist, I graduated high school and community college, and then finished with my Bachelor of Science. I feel at home in dental and I genuinely love it. I’ve worn many hats; from Office Manager to assistant. In these experiences, I realized my favorite part of the day was working with reps and knew I wanted to turn it into a career.

Throughout the years of transitioning from working in the practice to selling, I had great opportunities to help practices grow and develop. I also learned a lot about them and why some people love what they do and why some do not.

Three years ago, I had the pleasure of working with a phenomenal surgeon that ran her practice like a Swiss clock. I asked myself, “As her rep, how can I help her?” Her books were filled four months out, so she clearly didn’t need help in that area. However, I knew she aspired to lecture someday. I wanted to help her move to the next step, and with my encouragement and support we created a program for doctors to come in and learn from her. It was undoubtedly successful and encouraged her to constantly strive for greatness. It also gave her newfound energy and excitement to improve everything in her practice so she could share original and contemporary ideas with her attendees. When I speak with her now, I can hear that she is happy and excited, and I’m glad I could help bring the idea into existence.

For the doctors: How can you use your reps as resources to support the things you love to do? Partner with them and say things like, “I love doing these surgeries and these treatments. How can you help me?” I had a Periodontist tell me, “I really don’t enjoy osseous surgeries but I love implants.” Look to your reps to support you and ask them to brainstorm ideas on how to grow business and get more implants in. There are a lot of resources and support available that can help you stand out in the field you want to be a part of.

For staff: What is bringing you down? Is it the insurance process? Billing? Statements? Make a list of the things you do on a daily basis that bring you dread. Then know that there could be a better way! Ask your reps if they have heard of any other offices struggling with similar issues and how they have overcome them. Can you implement those ideas into your own practice? If a rep doesn’t have an answer, they will be more than happy to talk to others and find more information for you. They want to be there for you as a support system.

We can spend more time at work with our teams then we spend with our family. What can you do to love your day more? We might not have a great day every day, but wouldn’t it be nice to have those great days regularly?

During my time at the orthodontic practice, a great day for me meant everyone was on time, no one had broken appliances, and we put a smile on someone’s face. Today, I have a different definition of a great day. I love knowing that I have made someone’s day better or helped them achieve a new goal!

Last week I received this email from a customer:

“I must say I love your program. I was just thanking Dr. Roe this morning for getting me the program and telling him how much it helps make my job easier. He said he was sorry I didn’t know about OneMind Health a year ago.” – Rose, Port Towsend, WA

Thank you, Rose. A note like that truly makes my day great!
