Office Space: Mission Creek Dental

by Darcie Galbraith, BA, Interior Design Coach

THE WHY: Clinicians’ story
After 11 years of practice as an associate in Edmonton, AB, Dr. Daniel Kim and his family decided to open their dream practice in the thriving community of Kelowna, BC, which is cradled within a glorious range of mountains in a sanctuary filled with pristine lakes, pine forests, abundant gardens, orchards and vineyards, sandy beaches as well as superb amenities for its tourists and local citizens. His cherished time as an associate and exposure to great mentors empowered him to gain the experience, skills and well-rounded confidence that prepared him for taking the next step toward owning/opening the practice of his dreams while at the same time beginning his entrepreneurial journey in dentistry.

THE HOW: Planning & preparation
Mission Creek Dental began in its first location which was situated within the business district on the second floor of a building that had two flights of stairs with no elevator access. After being open for just a short while, the feedback from much of the elderly demographic motivated him to search for a more easily accessible, patient friendly location. With an agile and determined business mindset, Dr. Daniel decided to pivot by uprooting his practice and moving it to a bigger, better and more beautiful location in the commercial district where they could more optimally thrive and succeed. They are now located on the top floor of a brand-new building (penthouse vibe) with beautiful, 360-degree scenic views of the lake on one side and the mountains on the other, with a stunning wraparound, walk-out patio surrounding the entire practice. It was exactly what he always dreamed of.

THE RESULTS: Technical design features
The opulent atmosphere encompasses a timeless “mid-century modern” design with an exposed ceiling and light-colored custom wood elements, in a spacious, open concept, warm and inviting ‘living room’ vibe. As a result, prior to the pandemic many patients would often arrive to their appointments early just to enjoy the comforts of the space. “Mid-century modern” is defined by clean lines, organic forms, minimal ornamentation and high functionality. The style has an undeniably timeless appeal that has yet to leave the mainstream appeal.

THE IMPACT: Empowered practice outcomes
Many patients are encouraged and delighted to experience the atmosphere at Mission Creek Dental. Not just because of all the beauty of the space, but also because of the team’s warm, inviting and personal approach in which each patient is made to feel uniquely special during their care. The vibrant community of Kelowna has welcomed and embraced the Mission Creek Dental team and Dr. Kim and his family are enjoying the beautiful lifestyle it has to offer.
