Performance Architecture For Performance Dentistry

After devoting a large part of his practice to appearance-related procedures over the past 15 years and possessing a desire to own his practice facility, Dr. Jordan Soll and the Aesthetics in Dentistry team jumped at the chance to purchase a professional condominium at Yonge and Eglinton in mid-town Toronto. Locating on the 2nd floor pod of a 39 storey residential tower proved to be daunting. In conjunction with the developers’ engineers, dental company and contractor, solutions were found to overcome all obstacles.

Additional challenges appeared when downsizing from 1,700-sq-ft to 1,420-sq-ft. Wanting a fresh, bold look for his midtown practice, Dr. Soll turned to Tania Bortolotto of Bortolotto Design Architecture. The mandate was to have five operatories, staff room, consult room, business office, sterilization area, private office and lab. To create a sense of openness and novelty the reception area was created with overlapping curved walls. Glass was used extensively throughout the office by way of enclosing the consult room and privacy doors on all the operatories. Four of the five operatories have large windows that look out onto Yonge Street and the internal courtyard.

Mindful of the practice’s clientele, the designer selected a contemporary look using 20-inch mocha porcelain tiles, white walls, glass dividers, and brushed aluminum accents throughout. The overlapping reception room walls are finished in walnut and three bulb halogen fixtures add to the crisp look. All five treatment rooms have chairside monitors, which function as digital displays for radiographs, intra-oral cameras, as well as TVs.

By working with a designer/architect whose experience was primarily outside dentistry, the result is exciting and will be rewarding for years to come.
