An Edmonton dental hygienist displayed the importance of oral cancer screenings when she helped identify oral cancer in a patient during a routine dental cleaning appointment.
Jonathan Teghtmeyer thought he just had a canker sore when he attended his dental appointment in April 2022, but dental hygienist Vaishali Brotschi “noticed the lesion was discoloured – a little red, a little white, with irregular borders: all red flags, warning signs for cancer,” reports CBC News.
Teghtmeyer took her advise to see a doctor where it was confirmed he had a type of cancer that can form in the mouth. This example, and many more, show how important the dental team is in helping diagnose oral cancer at an early stage.
