With the shortage of dental hygienists, some dental professionals are considering encouraging more male dental hygienists to join the field, according to CBC. Currently, it is rare to see a male dental hygienist and Gerald Proctor notices the surprise from many patients when he meets them.

“Proctor is a rarity on P.E.I. According to the Dental Hygienist Association of P.EI., of approximately 120 registered hygienists on the Island, only three are men.”

Attracting more men to the field would help with the current issues facing the industry such as the long wait times, the new dental programs being implemented, and the recovery from COVID-19.
