Dentist Attacks ‘McDonald’s Approach’ to Scottish Dental Health Services

A Scottish dentist has warned that NHS patients are being let down with a fast-food approach to oral care that is “cheap and quick” and storing up dental problems for millions who cannot afford private treatment.

Douglas Thain said that decades of underfunding by the Scottish government had created a “toxic” environment as dentists battle rising costs and inadequate fees paid by health boards. According to Thain, who is the figurehead of a new body, the Scottish Dental Association (SDA), this has fostered a conveyor-belt mentality as NHS practitioners are forced to perform as many procedures as they can to make ends meet.
