Refugees and newcomers to Canada often have many barriers to overcome, but thanks to a $95,000 grant from Green Shield Canada, oral health should not be one of them.
“The money will allow us to provide navigation and accessibility to services for individuals … that don’t know the system, that don’t have any benefits or knowledge of how to navigate the system,” said Nidal Shauki, a nurse practitioner at the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County, which was one of six recipients of a total of $450,000 in grants announced Tuesday by the WindsorEssex Community Foundation.
Shauki said the Multicultural Council’s three-year oral health and wellness program has yearly goals of reaching over 300 people, educating them and introducing them to dental services through its partnership with the Smile Wagon’s mobile dental hygiene program.
