Karring–Nyman SUNSTAR Guidor Award is Awarded to…

Sunstar Americas today announced that Daniel Clark, DDS, PhD is the inaugural winner of the Karring–Nyman SUNSTAR Guidor Award, The award is sponsored by the Sunstar Foundation and awarded by the Periodontal Research Group (PRG) of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR).

Dr. Clark, a postdoctoral scholar at the UCSF School of Dentistry, received his award at the 95th General Session & Exhibition of the IADR, which was recently held in San Francisco.

The Karring–Nyman SUNSTAR Guidor Award will be conferred annually to the winner of a competition in which oral tissue regeneration research proposals are submitted to and evaluated by the PRG. The objective of the 10,000 Euro award is to defray consumables, travel and lodging expenses primarily, but not exclusively, for a doctoral student or post-doctoral scientist (who must be within 24 months of successful completion of a Ph.D. at the time of the submission deadline) to pursue research within the field of oral tissue regeneration. The applicant must be a student-member or full-member of the PRG at the time of submission deadline. There is no age restriction, but candidates less than 45 years will be favored. Further, preference will be given to projects involving collaborative research, where the recipient is spending time in another laboratory – preferably in another country – in connection with the specific project. The project may involve basic, pre-clinical in-vivo, or clinical research, but projects with a clear translational or clinical component will be favored. Occasionally, a priority topic will be announced and only projects related to this will be eligible for evaluation for that year’s award.

The judging panel comprises five members of the IADR’s PRG who have particular expertise in oral tissue regeneration. No panel member may have any conflict of interest regarding the proposed project. The main judging criteria will be importance and scientific quality of the project, and executability within a 12-month period.

“We are very excited to sponsor this prestigious award and help cast a spotlight on the very important topic of oral tissue regeneration,” said Marie Wilson, MPH, Senior Manager of Scientific Affairs & Professional Relations for Sunstar. “We congratulate Dr. Clark on this honor, and we look forward to seeing the results of his research.”

The award is named for Professor Thorkild Karring, a longtime member of the Department of Periodontology of the Royal Dental College in Aarhus (now the department of dentistry at Sunstar Americas Inc. 301 East Central Road Schaumburg, IL 60195 Aarhus University) in Denmark and a past president of the PRG, and Professor Sture Nyman, a former professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and a frequent collaborator with Professor Karring in the field of oral tissue regeneration research.
