Montreal Police Officers Face Suspension Due to Dental-Fee Conflict

Back in February 2019, two police officers intervened during a dental-fee dispute and are now being suspended for their actions.

Leveesa Lessey, a 38-year-old mother, took her son to a dentist appointment to have cavities filled. She agreed to amalgam fillings, typically covered by insurance, but the dentist used composite fillings which were going to cost her. When Lessey refused to pay, the dental office called the police and Montreal police officers Jérôme Côté-Joncas and David Picard arrived.

The officers then preceded to threaten arrest if Lessey did not pay the bill.

According to the Montreal Gazette, “In March, the ethics committee ruled Picard committed two breaches during the intervention: interfering in a civil dispute, and not acting in an impartial manner. It found Côté-Joncas breached the same codes, in addition to abusing his authority by intimidating Lessey.”
