Newly Accredited Program Hopes to Relieve Dental Assistant Shortage

A University of Saskatchewan dentistry program has received accreditation after months of waiting, meaning its first cohort of students can finally go to work.

The college of dentistry’s dental assistant program graduated its first cohort of 30 students in spring, but had yet to be certified by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada until last week.

That meant students, who are trained to perform a wide range of tasks including administering anesthesia and assisting in restorative procedures, could only work as dental aides, an auxiliary position with far fewer competencies.
