Welland, Falls Dental Clinic Woman Told to Stop Using Doctor Title

A woman who was using the title of doctor/physician to administer Botox or cosmetic fillers at a Welland dental clinic has promised to stop after the College of Physicians and Surgeons started an investigation last year into whether she was operating in contravention of the Regulated Health Professions Act.

Warkaa Al-Shukrii, who is not a member of the college or of any regulated health profession, had been performing both services at Besma Dental, 167 Riverside Dr., in Welland and at Lundy’s Lane Dental, Unit 2, 8123 Lundy’s Lane, Niagara Falls.

A report on the college’s Unregistered Practitioners section said Al-Shukrii signed an undertaking — a promise which she has made to the college — on Jan. 11 to stop performing the two services and acknowledged that the administration of Botox and cosmetic fillers are controlled acts under the Medicine Act, which she is not permitted to perform.

The college website said an unregistered practitioner is a person who has been practising medicine without a certificate of registration authorizing the person to do so and without being properly delegated to do so by an Ontario-registered doctor; and/or a person who has been holding him/herself out as a physician in contravention of the Regulated Health Professions Act or the Medicine Act.
