Dr. Terry Donovan hosts an amazing week long seminar at Plummer’s Trophy Lodge

For 19 years Dr. Terry Donovan has hosted an amazing week long seminar at Plummer’s Trophy Lodge in the remote west arm of Great Bear Lake. The premise behind hosting a seminar in this unique location is world class fishing, collegial camaraderie, and cutting-edge continuing education topics. This year Terry was joined by one of his close friends, Dr. Harold Heymann, from the University of North Carolina who proved to be a most engaging lecturer.

This year was my fourth visit and I was a part of a group from all over North America. We had dentists from Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, Colorado, and North Carolina. Among them was my eldest daughter, Melissa, who has recently graduated from the University of British Columbia faculty of dentistry.

While the fishing up here is remarkable, the amount of dental information we leave with is incredible. The topics covered between Terry and Harold were so diverse. Discussions included diagnosis and management of root caries, dentin and enamel adhesives, diagnosis and management of dental erosion, esthetic considerations with removable partial dentures, tooth whitening, all ceramic systems, bonded bridges, techniques for intra-oral porcelain repair, and porcelain veneers. In such a supportive learning environment everyone asks questions to stimulate each other and the critical thinking goes outside the box.

Before heading home we all crowded outside the lodge to get a photo with our Oral Health magazine. Such a trip like this deserves to be shared with our dental community. We are already looking forward to next year, gaining new information, making new contacts, reuniting with old friends and we will make sure to bring the Oral Health along!
