FDI is holding the FDI African Congress and 1st International Dental Exhibition in Africa, to take place in Dakar, Senegal, 8 to 10 November 2014.It is the first of a series of three dental congresses in Africa for the period 2014-2016 inclusive. They will be developed in partnership with UNIDI, the Italian Dental Manufacturers Association. For the purposes of these events, FDI has entered into a three-year agreement with international and local partner IDEA Dakar.
Under the agreement, FDI will grant the use of the FDI logo in event branding and promote the congresses through its electronic media and various publication outlets. It may complement the scientific programme of the first event but will be in charge of the scientific programme of the subsequent two events.
Capacity-buildingThe new series of congresses are part of FDI’s Strategy for Africa, re-invigorated at an FDI African Summit held in Cape Town in October 2012, placing emphasis on national dental association capacity-building. For the 2014 Dakar event, FDI will organize a two-day African Summit for the Presidents of 20 African National Dental Associations (NDAs), with a focus on leadership training.
“FDI’s new programmes and initiatives directly focused on Africa are a great source of pride for our Federation,” says FDI President Dr Tin Chun Wong. “I am very pleased, as FDI President, to have been party to these developments during my mandate: they are beneficial for oral health on the African continent and enhance FDI’s reputation as a leader in the field.”
For President-Elect Dr Patrick Hescot, who Chairs the FDI Strategy for Africa Task Team, the FDI/IDEA partnership, which he initiated, heralds a new era for oral health in Africa. “With this initial series of events, FDI now has the means and resources to fulfil its long-held ambitions of improving the state of oral health on the African continent.
Strengthening NDAs will, in the long run, have a significant and positive impact on each country’s dental sector and the ability of dental practitioners to reach a wider segment of the population.”
