The AACD Charitable Foundation (AACDCF) is offering dental professionals the chance to support domestic violence survivors by becoming virtual participants in the second annual Race For Smiles 5K Run/Walk.
Race For Smiles will take place Oct. 6, 2013, at Vilas Park in Madison, WI. The event benefits the AACDCF’s Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program, which restores the damaged smiles of survivors of intimate partner violence.
Individuals who would like to participate in Race For Smiles but cannot make the trip to Wisconsin are encouraged to participate virtually. To become a virtual race participant, individuals can register at www.gbasraceforsmiles.com. Participants will be mailed a long-sleeved race shirt, and are encouraged to run or walk a 5K on Oct. 6. If they submit their 5K times or a photo of themselves wearing the shirt to GBAS, they will be entered into a contest to win a prize.
“We decided to offer the virtual Race For Smiles because we received lots of interest from dental professionals nationwide,” said Lisa Fitch, AACDCF director. “With the virtual race, you can get active wherever you are—and support survivors of domestic violence.”

Give Back a Smile was developed to address a need in the communities of AACD members. Volunteer dentists and laboratory technicians agree to restore the broken and damaged teeth in the smile-zone of survivors of intimate partner violence. Generous AACD dentists help erase the memories of abuse by restoring the smiles at no cost to the survivors thereby restoring their lives. To date, AACD members have donated more than $13 million in services to restore smiles to help more than 1,200 individuals.
