Minamata Convention: practical advice for dentists

FDI will soon be making available a toolkit developed by the Education Committee containing practical advice for dentists on how to implement the provisions on dental amalgam in the Minamata Convention on Mercury in a clinical setting.

It follows the launch at the September FDI Annual World Dental Congress in New Delhi of the brochure ‘Dental Restorative Materials and the Minamata Convention: Guidelines for implementation’

Contents include approaches that individual dentists can adopt immediately that will allow the best care of patients. By properly handling amalgam and amalgam waste, the dental profession can protect the health of the environment and still provide optimal patient care.

Perhaps most importantly, efforts and success in disease prevention will diminish the need for restoration, and therefore diminish the waste products of any restorative material, while increasing human health through improved oral health.
