New CEREC software reconstructs the original occlusalsurface. The automatic design procedure is fast, reliableand compatible with all relevant indications.

Like a fingerprint, no two human teeth are identical. Each tooth has its own unique characteristics. A group of researchers led by Professor Dr. Albert Mehl, Zurich University and Professor Dr. Volker Blanz, Siegen University have harnessed this finding to the new Sirona CEREC 3D software. Version 3.80 of CEREC 3D now enables dentists to easily create completely natural reconstructions even of completely damaged occlusal surfaces. On the basis of a single intact tooth, the program can extrapolate the natural morphology of the patients other teeth. Biogeneric occlusal surface design can be used for all singletooth restorations, as well as for anatomical bridges.

Biogenerics is based exclusively on the patients individual dentition. This is a major advantage in terms of clinical reliability: the more individual the occlusion, the better the resultant functionality, Professor Mehl explains.

Until now all occlusal computer-aided design approaches have been based on dental libraries and databases containing a sample form for each tooth number. Conventional CAD/CAM programs retrieve a matching tooth from the archive as a design proposal for the construction. The user then manually edits and adapts this proposal. The problem is that the selection of the matching database tooth is subjective. No metric principles exist to assist this selection. The standard teeth are comparable to ready-to-wear garments manufactured in standard sizes. Frequently, such garments do not fit properly in all places and require subsequent alteration. By contrast a biogenerically designed tooth is custom-made for each patient.

Biogeneric will revolutionize occlusal surface design, says Bart Doedens, Senior Vice President Dental CAD/CAM Systems at Sirona. With a single mouse click, the user obtains a natural and individually designed restoration that requires little, if any, manual adjustment.

Such made-to-measure restorations are simpler, quicker and above all more precise than their conventional equivalents.

Biogeneric design will replace the dental database feature in the CEREC software. With immediate effect it will be possible to create crowns, veneers and anatomically sized bridges just as easily as inlays and onlays. All that the user requires is an intact reference tooth of the same type i.e. anterior or posterior. The timeconsuming adaptation of the restoration to the clinical situation has been virtually eliminated. Thanks to the standardized and largely automated routines, the software is easy to learn and use.
