Hygiene Spotlight features an exceptional dental hygienist every month. This month, we are showcasing Amanda Zubricki, RDH, a passionate advocate for healthcare professionals supporting individuals with hearing loss and an unapologetically deaf professional. She shares the barriers she has faced as a hygienist with hearing loss and offers insights on how dental practices can be more inclusive.

What sort of barriers have you faced as a hygienist with hearing loss and how have you overcome these challenges?

I’ve faced many barriers as a hygienist with hearing loss, including ableism, communication challenges, and certain patient interactions. To overcome these, I tackle them head-on and stay proactive. These experiences have also empowered me to advocate for better practices within the profession.

What can dental professionals do to make their practices more inclusive for those hard of hearing?

Providing clear masks and having interpreters can go a long way. Educate your staff about deaf culture and effective communication strategies with deaf or hard of hearing individuals. This training can include basic sign language, awareness of visual cues, and the importance of maintaining eye contact. Supplement verbal instructions with written materials. After a consultation or procedure, provide detailed written instructions or visual aids that patients can take home with them. Hiring staff members who have hearing loss can foster a more inclusive and empathetic environment. It also provides valuable insights into how the practice can further accommodate deaf or hard of hearing patients.

What advice do you have for other dental professionals who have disabilities?

My advice is to stay the course and not give up. This too shall pass.

What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?

I’m honestly most proud of where I am today. Being deaf has shaped me into the person I’m meant to be and brought me to where I’m meant to be.

What is your favourite tv show or movie and why?

Grey’s Anatomy never gets old!
