Behind Closed Doors

When Dr. Benjamin Lin, oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and his wife, Dr. Clara Chow, orthodontist, decided to open an office together in Markham, ON, they recognized the unique challenges they faced in bringing their two specialties together.

Orthodontic offices tend to be more open concept while oral surgery is typically done in private, closed operatories. Despite these differences in office design philosophies, Drs. Lin and Chow were able to combine elements of both into their 1,800-sq-ft practice. Ultimately, their main goal was to provide a space that was warm and inviting to patients who may be anxious regarding their appointment.

This new office uses digital radiography, digital photography and a paperless practice management system.

The office features a spa-like atmosphere with a relaxing, earthtone colour scheme. Double frameless glass doors greet the patients at the entrance, where they enter a reception area that has custom millwork with an abundant use of glass, polished ceramic tiles, and a dry walled ceiling and bulkhead with inlaid potlights. Towards the clinical areas, the patients are met with abundant natural light and picturesque scenery from the panoramic windows of the orthodontic bay and operatories. The sterilization center with its Corian countertops and glass backsplash is separated from the calming recovery area with a modern glass partition.
