What is the one piece of technology you could not work without?

When I was introduced to intra-oral cameras 30 years ago, I was so impressed with the technology that I installed one in every operatory. It is the best way to educate patients and show them the condition of their oral health. It provides us with the ability to capture and record on camera pathologies, fractured teeth, etc., as well as showcase the intricate dentistry that we create daily. The iTero is an incredibly updated version which can also be used for patient education.

What have you observed to be the biggest change to the dentistry profession since you began your career?

When I graduated in 1987, it was a very exciting time in dentistry. White composite resins were introduced, porcelain veneers using ceramic materials were developed, and these materials and techniques changed the face of dentistry. The impact was life changing for patients who could now achieve a beautiful smile. This was further achieved with the introduction of implants. Patients who lost some or all of their teeth could regain function and form. They could eat properly again and, thereby, could increase their life expectancy.

What is a skill that you feel would be important to teach a new practitioner that is not taught or highlighted in school?

My advice to a new practitioner is to be patient, always strive to provide the best dentistry for all your patients, and have integrity and pride in all you do. I recommend that you always continue to learn and take courses that would allow you to gain the skill, confidence and knowledge to ensure that your practice reflects the latest dental technologies and techniques. The beautiful thing about dentistry is that there are many various disciplines that you can focus on, enjoy and perfect.

What steps or actions do you take to manage stress?

Exercise is my main stress relief. Cycling and tennis are my favourite activities to relax and to alleviate the everyday pressures of our profession. I also enjoy long walks on the beautiful trails in Mississauga with my wife, daughters and our recently adopted puppy. Having a three-day weekend helps to recharge my battery and prepare me for the work week. Vacations help to provide the much-needed balance in my fast-paced life. My preferred holiday would be in Italy or somewhere warm.

What is your favourite book/movie and why?

I enjoy reading murder mysteries, especially if I can identify with the era and setting of the novel. My favourite book is The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown. It has intrigue, history, a European background and suspense, and enough clues to encourage my amateur detective skills. My all-time favourite movies are The Count of Monte Cristo and James Bond: Casino Royale – both filled with adventure, action, excitement, and beautiful settings.
