Fiona “Mouthboxx” Helps Launch Mentoring Event for New Dental Hygienists

by Oral Health

Hygiene Spotlight features an exceptional dental hygienist every month. This month, we are showcasing Fiona aka “Mouthboxx” a self proclaimed “non-traditional hygienist” who uses her online platform to educate and mentor fellow dental hygienists as they progress in their careers.

Why did you decide to pursue dental hygiene as a career?

I grew up with an interest in dentistry, which later flourished into love. My initial goal was to be a dentist but somewhere along the way I learned about dental hygiene and greatly appreciated the care I could provide patients with this role as well. Dental hygiene provided an ability for me to be a primary provider for clients and create changes within their health and lives.

What accomplishment are you most proud of and why?

I am proud of what I have been able to achieve thus far. It is within my nature to continue to strive for more, which is what I have done with my RDH credentials. I have found ways to work outside of the operatory as a Clinical Educator, Mentor, Speaker, Content Creator and Consultant.

I have also been able to dig deeper into personal goals of providing care to low income communities, local and abroad, such as Dominican Republic and Peru. It’s such a great feeling to be able to give back and focus on care without profit and production goals looming over head.

My journey is still in progress and ever changing; I have many things in the works that I hope will make me smile with pride.

What is the one piece of technology or a product you could not work without?

I absolutely love intraoral digital scanners. I can work without it but I really don’t want to. It’s a quick alternative to achieving dental molds and comparing information from visit to visit in the client’s mouth.

You are the co-founder of The RDH New Grad Summit. Can you tell us a little about this event?

Making the move from Dental Hygiene School to the dental office can be very daunting. I joined forces with Tempstars Dental Temping App to provide The RDH New Grad Summit, a full day event focused on mentoring for Dental Hygiene Students taking the leap from school to the dental op. The Summit focuses on some of the most stressful topics when end of school is near; board prep, time management, advocacy as a new grad and more.
