Why did you decide to pursue dental hygiene as a career?
When I was a child, I loved to see people smile. I would smile at people and wait for them to smile back. When they did not smile back, I would ask them why they did not smile. They often said they did not like their teeth. I made up my mind that I would help people improve their smiles.
What inspired you to create your brand, “The Geriatric Toothfairy”?
Working in long-term care facilities, I noticed how neglected oral care was, how the staff needed oral hygiene training, how many dental professionals needed to be made aware of what was happening, and how some required additional training on oral care for the geriatric population. My tagline for the Geriatric Toothfairy brand is: “Being the voice for those whose voice has become a whisper.”
Do you have a mentor in the industry? How did you find them, and do you have any advice for finding a mentor?
Yes, Dr. Leroy Polite, I used to work with him for over 15 years. He would always encourage me to educate myself more and reach the top. Mentors should encourage us to be our best selves, go for the stars, and never stop trying.
Advice for other dental hygienists?
I would tell hygienists to own their voice and know they are a professional, just like dentists, so they walk in their truth and see the value we add to the dental profession.
What is the one technology or a product you could not work without?
Aseptico Go and Cleanadent.
What is your favorite TV show or movie, and why?
I like the Women Queen and Burlesque because both movies show powerful women coming through challenging life events. I often watch them when I have challenges in my life.
