Kirsten Fisher’s career evolution, from clinical hygienist to educator

by Oral Health

Hygiene Spotlight features an exceptional dental hygienist every month. This month, we are showcasing Kirsten Fisher, who always knew she wanted to work in the dental field. She uses her position as a Swiss Dental Academy trainer and her online social platforms to educate fellow hygienists.

Why did you decide to pursue dental hygiene as a career?

My mom was a dental assistant so growing up I spent a lot of time at the dental office. From the age of five, I knew that I wanted a career in the dental field. In grade nine, I worked at her dental office as a sterilization assistant, and I loved every minute of it! I chose my university to attend because it was the only one in Alberta that had a dental program. After being accepted into the University of Alberta’s Dental Hygiene program, I knew I had made the right choice. I always loved school, and I still have a passion for learning. I met lifelong friends in my hygiene program, and I have fond memories of the experiences I had at university.

You are a Swiss Dental Academy educator. How did you get into the educational side of dental hygiene and how has your experience been thus far?

After 12 years of doing clinical dental hygiene, I knew I was looking for a change of pace. I had always been interested in educating fellow dental hygienists, but I live in a city where there are no clinical hygiene programs to teach at. An opportunity came up to become a Swiss Dental Academy trainer, and I jumped at the chance to broaden my career and to share my passion for education in dental hygiene. The experience has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve got to travel, connect with fellow dental professionals who share the same passion as me, and I have also learned a lot. I have probably had the most growth in my career since being an SDA trainer as it has allowed me to continue learning and pushing myself into perhaps uncomfortable areas such as public speaking. It has opened up other opportunities for educational roles in my field as well. I am so grateful to have become an SDA trainer, and I am so proud to be able to educate fellow dental professionals about Guided Biofilm Therapy and ways that we can improve our practice and ourselves.

You make educational and engaging content online. What type of content do you find resonates most with your audience and what type of content do you enjoy making most?

I love connecting with people through social media. I find that different people like different posts. For example, fellow hygienists and people in the dental industry like relatable content such as pain points that we experience in our jobs. I find people who are not in the dental industry like the quick, educational tips that are easy to implement at home. My favorite type of content to make are humorous videos that a lot of my colleagues can relate to. I also enjoy sharing some of the tips and tricks I have learnt over the last 13 years in the dental industry. I try to just have fun with it and not take it too seriously.

Advice for other dental hygienists?

I believe that staying current and up to date on the latest research and best practice standards are imperative for having a successful and fulfilling dental hygiene career. It can sometimes be easy to stay stagnant; however, in my experience, I have found that this has led me to feeling burnt out or bored in my job. Going to a conference or a dental event where you can network always motivates me and encourages me to be better in my career.

I get asked frequently from fellow hygienists “how can I find a job outside of clinical hygiene” and my best response is to stay active in your dental community. Volunteer to be on boards that interest you, network with other dental professionals that inspire you, and don’t be afraid to ask for opportunities. People don’t know if you are looking for opportunities if you don’t let them know. Be open to learning and don’t be afraid to ask questions. We are in an industry that is always evolving and advancing, so don’t be afraid to grow with it!

What do you like to do for fun?

I live by the mountains and enjoy spending time outdoors with my family. I have three young kids who keep me busy with sports and activities, so there is never a dull moment. I also love to knit when a get a chance.

What is the one piece of technology or a product you could not work without?

Obviously, my EMS Airflow prophylaxis master unit! Anyone who has had the opportunity to use this device knows what a game changer it is for the dental world. Not only has it made my job easier and more comfortable, but it offers patients an efficient and effective way to have dental hygiene therapy without pain or sensitivity. Knowing that is backed by science and research is a must for me too. I have to add in my ergo loupes as well. These have been a total life safer for my neck, and the odd time that I’ve had to work without them, a realize what an asset they are.

What is your favourite tv show or movie and why?

I love trashy realty tv! I find that I am so busy during the day between work and family, so when I get a chance to relax at night, I love to watch a show that is easy and light. I also am a huge fan of Hocus Pocus (the original) and Love Actually. Classics in my opinion.
