Hygiene Spotlight features an exceptional dental hygienist every month. This month, we are showcasing Jazmine Chavez, RDH, Founder of Pearl House Studio, which provides a modernized approach to preventative dental hygiene care. Last year, Jazmine stepped into a role at The Dental HyGenius, which helps dental professionals master the business side of dentistry.
Why did you decide to pursue dental hygiene as a career?
I was drawn to hygiene for the hours and the pay-to be honest! But I also wanted to take care of people.
You are currently the face of The Dental HyGenius. Can you tell us a little about the organization and how you got involved?
I was a client of Tracy Baker—she helped me get my current practice started. After her tragic passing, I had reached out to her mom Margaret (who is wonderful) just to offer my condolences, and the conversation began there.
Do you have a mentor in the industry? How did you find them and any advice for finding a mentor?
My mentor was Tracy. I still feel her presence and regularly ask myself, what would Trace do? My advice would be to find someone who is as like-minded as you are. Find someone who will fight for you when you’re about ready to give up.
What accomplishments are you most proud of and why?
My two sons, of course, are number one, and my practice. I have a very “hold my beer” attitude and faced many roadblocks but came out on the other side, still pushing through. Definitely something to be proud of.

What is your #1 piece of advice for dental hygienists who want to own their own practice?
Never take swimming lessons from drawing people. You are one connection away from building the life of your dreams, and never-ever stop.
What do you like to do for fun?
My sons are baseball stars. So being out on the field with them and watching them do what they love—priceless.
Favourite dental people/accounts to follow?
Oh man, too many to count! I love everyone’s creativity. I think we all can learn a lot from each other.
What has been the biggest hurdle you have faced so far in your career and how did you manage it?
Just starting a practice from the ground up. Having not bought an existing practice or patient list is tough because all patients are coming through organically. Which is good, but very stressful at the same time.
What is the one piece of technology or a product you could not work without?
My Montana Jack.
What is your favourite tv show or movie and why?
My comfort show is Peaky Blinders, haha. I love Tommy Shelby and his business sense.
