Abstract
The evolution of dental education must extend beyond undergraduate training to meet the continuous learning needs of practicing professionals. Challenges such as maintaining clinical proficiency, standardizing skill assessment, and integrating advanced techniques into practice necessitate innovative training solutions. This paper focuses on leveraging technological platforms to enhance continuing education (CE) courses for practicing dentists. These tools offer quantified, supervised training that enables practitioners to refine their skills, receive objective feedback, and stay updated on the latest advancements in dentistry. By integrating these technologies, CE programs can create a robust framework for lifelong learning and professional development.
1. Introduction
Continuing education (CE) is a cornerstone of professional growth for dentists, ensuring they remain proficient and capable of delivering high-quality care. Traditional CE methods, such as workshops and lectures, often fall short in providing hands-on, repeatable training experiences tailored to individual needs. Furthermore, subjective assessment and inconsistent feedback limit the efficacy of skill development. Addressing these gaps, advanced platforms like DenTeach and PrepScanner offer scalable, data-driven solutions to modernize CE courses.
This paper explores how AI-powered robotized technologies such as DenTeach and PrepScanner can enhance CE programs by providing practicing dentists with immersive, interactive training opportunities. These tools empower clinicians to engage in self-directed learning, achieve measurable skill improvements, and integrate cutting-edge techniques into their practices. Additionally, the adoption of such platforms promotes consistency, fairness, and efficiency in dental training programs, ultimately elevating the standard of care across the profession.
2. Challenges in continuing dental education
2.1. Skill retention and enhancement:
Practicing dentists often struggle to maintain and improve their technical skills due to limited opportunities for hands-on training. As dentistry evolves with new materials, tools, and techniques, staying proficient becomes increasingly challenging. For example, advanced implant placement techniques and minimally invasive restorative procedures require regular practice to master.
2.2. Subjective assessment:
Traditional CE courses rely heavily on instructor judgment, leading to variability in feedback and evaluation. This inconsistency hampers dentists’ ability to identify and address specific skill gaps effectively. Inconsistent grading also affects practitioners’ confidence, leaving them unsure of their true capabilities.
2.3. Time and resource constraints:
Balancing CE requirements with clinical practice and personal responsibilities limits dentists’ availability for in-depth training. The lack of scalable, flexible training solutions exacerbates this issue. Furthermore, the high costs associated with traditional CE methods, such as travel and workshop fees, often act as a barrier to participation.
3. Solutions offered by DenTeach and PrepScanner
3.1. DenTeach: Interactive, immersive learning for dentists
DenTeach revolutionizes CE training by providing a technology-driven platform that combines instructor- -based learning with real-time feedback powered by AI.
