Western Med Student Becomes First Non-binary, Trans Person to Receive Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Award

Gavin Raner, a third-year medical student at Western University Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, became the first transgender and nonbinary-identifying person to receive the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Award this past August. Raner is also the first non-binary person to be registered with the Ontario Medical Association.

Raner was one of 13 medical students across Canada honoured with the award. Recipients receive a $5,000 cash prize and a complimentary ticket and travel subsidy to attend the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Halifax, N.S..
