Dentists: Lifelong Learners

continuing education

We are truly fortunate for a career in dentistry, which is dedicated to pursuing continuing education. Albert Einstein said it best, “Once you stop learning, you start dying.” Although the formal training of dental school may be behind you, your experiential training now starts. Whether it be staying current with the latest literature, sharpening, and expanding your clinical skill set, strengthening your leadership tactics, or enhancing your business acumen, lifelong learning is a must in dentistry today. Committing yourself to quality continuing education courses is crucial, which will add value to your work and improve your career.

Tips for curating CE:

  1. Choose courses and topics that interest you. You will naturally be more engaged with areas of study that you enjoy and desire to improve in.
  2. Join a network of continuing learners. Various dental organizations exist that foster a sense of camaraderie when it comes to continued studies. A group of like-minded colleagues is a great asset regarding course selection and speaker recommendations.
  3. Make it social! Learning amongst friends makes the experience more enjoyable. Consider turning a particular course into a reunion with classmates or gathering with colleagues. It’s a great way to stay in touch with friends while learning.
  4. Consider incorporating a seminar into your next vacation. Destination learning can be a win-win in gaining new knowledge while visiting new places. It can also be used as a write-off!
  5. Incorporate varied learning strategies. Consider both didactic and hands-on programs. Not all learning requires time away from the office or your family. With today’s technology, quality CE webinars can be taken from the comfort of your home and incorporated into your busy schedule.
  6. Consider a growth mindset. Where do you see yourself within the practice of dentistry in 5 years? Work backwards and consider courses that propel you closer to these goals.

A passion for lifelong learning will ignite your personal and professional growth, setting you up for success. As dental school graduates, the foundation has been laid for developing a fruitful career. A devotion to continued education will serve you well in your personal and professional endeavours. “Commit yourself to lifelong learning. The most valuable asset you have is your mind and what you put into it,” said Brian Tracy.
