Intro to FCDSA

Established in 2017, the Federation of Canadian Dentistry Student Associations (FCDSA) plays a pivotal role in uniting the voices of over 2000 dental students across Canada. The FCDSA is the organization that brings together the student associations of each of the ten accredited Canadian DDS/DMD programs. Embodying a commitment to advocacy, education, and community, FCDSA has made significant strides in shaping the landscape of dental education in the country.

Advocacy: A National Collective Voice

The FCDSA liaises between dental students and key stakeholders, such as the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), the National Dental Examining Board (NDEB), and CDSPI. Through collaborative efforts, the Federation advocates for the interests and concerns of its members, contributing to the ongoing improvement of dental education and patient care on a national scale.

Education: Supplementary Learning Opportunities

Recognizing the importance of ongoing education, FCDSA offers a monthly webinar series covering topics beyond the standard dental school curriculum. Past webinar topics have included study strategies tailored for dental school and effective patient communication. Further, FCDSA has integrated a Language Toolkit into its educational initiatives, designed to aid students in conversing with patients who speak different languages. This innovative tool reflects the Federation’s commitment to inclusivity and patient-centered care.

Community: Connecting Future Professionals

The strength of FCDSA lies in its sense of community, offering a great opportunity for dental students to meet peers from across the country and get a taste of organized dentistry. Most of the FCDSA’s work is accomplished through various committees. These committees provide opportunities for dental students to actively engage in the Federation’s initiatives, contributing to its ongoing success. Getting involved is made accessible through the students’ local dental student association, fostering a collaborative environment that prepares future professionals for the dynamic field of dentistry.

A cornerstone event for the FCDSA is the bi-annual Canadian Dental Student Conference (CDSC). The recently held CDSC in Montreal (January 2023) offered students an enriching experience with keynote speakers, hands-on sessions, break-out sessions, and valuable networking opportunities. Students at this conference got to experience placing implants in models and new endodontic techniques, among many other great speakers. The upcoming CDSC in Vancouver (January 2025) is anticipated to continue building a supportive community for future dental professionals.

In conclusion, the FCDSA is a vital organization that propels Canadian dental students towards a future marked by unity, excellence, and a shared commitment to advancing oral health care. As the Federation continues to evolve and address the changing needs of its members, it remains steadfast in its mission to advocate, educate, and build a connected community of future dental professionals.
