Operation Smile is a volunteer-delivered global medical charity that provides free, safe surgery and comprehensive care to patients with cleft lip and palate in 35+ countries worldwide. Operation Smile Canada raises funds from donor partners who want to directly impact the lives of children living with cleft conditions and other facial differences. These conditions affect not only a child’s appearance but also their ability to eat, speak, and lead a healthy life.
Operation Smile’s goal for the next decade is to increase access to cleft and essential surgical care for one million patients living in low-and middle-income countries. Achieving this goal requires more people caring for more patients in more places.
Operation Smile Student Programs: How Young Leaders are Changing the World
Through our Student Programs, we work hand in hand with compassionate students and youth leaders like you to raise awareness and funds to make a lifelong difference in children’s lives, one smile at a time.
Elementary
Students across Canada begin their engagement and fundraising early! Sometimes, it is because of a teacher’s compassionate leadership and direction; other times, family or friends lead it. We are here to support elementary school students and educators with tools, resources, encouragement, and recognition for their efforts while helping them become good global citizens.
High School
In Canada, many high school students are required to log community volunteer service hours to graduate. Even if it is not part of the curriculum, today’s youth care deeply about causes and want to get involved to make a difference. Operation Smile offers several leadership development opportunities and global initiatives.
University/Post Secondary
Once exposed to philanthropy, students continue to engage at the undergraduate and graduate levels to form deeper connections with causes they care about. Forming official clubs, hosting fundraising events, or participating in student leadership initiatives, including Operation Smile’s International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC), are all ways undergraduate and graduate students can make a difference.
Take the students at York University, for example. Students involved in a pre-dental club called Bright Future Dentists decided they wanted to make a difference. In collaboration with Operation Smile, they hosted a learning and networking event where students got to learn and connect with their peers and professionals in the industry. Not only was this an excellent opportunity for students, but the night’s proceeds went to Operation Smile, ensuring children born with cleft conditions worldwide receive the care they need. Getting involved and making a meaningful impact on the world is as simple as that.

Community Fundraising Events
Organize local events, such as charity walks, bake sales, or silent auctions, to raise funds for Operation Smile. Engaging the community in these activities generates financial support and spreads awareness about the cause.
