DENTAL SPECIALISTS HOLD FIRST-EVER JOINT SCIENTIFIC SESSIONS
The Canadian Dental Specialties Scientific Session (CDS3) will be held in Montreal, QC from September 14 to 16, 2006. “This is the first time we have ever cooperated in an event of this scope,” said Dr. Richard Marcus, Chair of the CDS3 Organizing Committee. “It is the first event to be designed exclusively for dental specialists. It represents a significant learning opportunity for participants. We believe we will all benefit from exposure to branches of dentistry other than our own. It will enhance our ability to serve our patients better, and make us more aware of ways we can combine our respective treatments with other dental specialties” he stated.
“This is a major event for all specialists,” said Dr. Gerry Solomon, president of the Canadian Association of Orthodontists. “For the first time, we are presenting, with almost the entire specialist dental community, scientific material of interest to all of us.”
The CDS3 program focuses heavily on ways dental specialists can work with one another to provide a high level of integrated care for patients. Sessions dealing with multi- or inter-disciplinary approaches include Multi-disciplinary approach to anterior tooth replacement, Inter-disciplinary dentistry, Uncompromised success: total team treatment, Benefits of combined surgical-orthodontic treatment and Quality of life: implications for treatment need and treatment outcomes from multi-disciplinary perspectives. In these sessions, participants will discover ways in which they can work with other specialists in diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care of patients. Some sessions also offer opportunities for case discussions with the presenters.
CDS3 features presentations on the interactions between dental and other health care. Depression, anxiety, dementia and dental considerations when providing dental care for the mentally ill provides perspectives on the effects of mental disorders on dental specialist treatment. The effects of physical disease, including its causative role, are presented in the Quality of life session, which discusses among other issues, care of patients with Downs syndrome and head and neck cancer.
Rounding out the specialists program are sessions on Restorative materials and risk assessment for early childhood caries, Endodontic treatment versus dental implants and Maxillofacial distraction and osteogenesis. There is also a discussion on Digital photography for those specialists who wish to use this tool in their practices.
CDS3 features an extensive program for auxiliaries as well. There is a presentation on Women’s wellness: an oral health perspective on perimenopause new science, new clinical applications. A half-day presentation will give all specialist auxiliaries a better appreciation of the activities in allied dental specialties. Auxiliaries are invited to attend any of the Saturday sessions in which they are interested.
During the two days of the scientific sessions, there will be a trade show and presentations by suppliers to the specialist dental community on their latest materials and techniques.
“This is a must-attend event for specialists who want to remain current in their practices,” said Dr. Solomon. Dr. Marcus agreed: “CDS3 offers something for every forward-looking specialist. We will all grow as a result of this program.”
