Clog – No-flow flowables, the new 2-step posterior paradigm

by George Freedman DDS, FAACD, FADFE, FACD

1. Occlusal decay is readily visible. Electronic shade is taken for color matching the composite.

2. After conservative preparation, BeautiBond (Shofu) 7th generation adhesive is applied to the prepared tooth structures.

3. The adhesive is thoroughly air-dried.

4. Several seconds of light curing polymerize the thin adhesive layer.

5. Shofu BeautiFil Flow Plus F00 (no-flow) is used to develop the cusp ridges similarly to a lab wax-up. The DB ridge was placed first and then the MB. No curing is required at this stage as the F00 does not flow.

6. The ML cusp ridge is positioned.

7. All cusp ridges are in correct anatomical position as guided by the remaining tooth structure.

8. The first light curing step is now completed.

9. Shofu BeautiFil Flow Plus F03, more flowable than F00,is used to fill in the valleys between the cured cusp ridges.

10. The second and final light curing step is completed.

11.The completed 2-step restoration is well adapted to the remaining occlusal tooth structure, and often requires little or no adjustment.
