What have you observed to be the biggest change to the dentistry profession since you began your career?

Over time patients have become more informed with the internet and social media. This creates more expectations because patients are more educated about dentistry. This will have a positive impact by making us offer and deliver the best treatment options and achieve the best outcome possible for the patients’ health.

What is a skill that you feel would be important to teach a new practitioner that is not taught or highlighted in school?

Being humble and human plays a vital role in the success of a business. Being kind and helpful with your patients. Investing time with your staff. Making sure that they are happy, fulfilled and motivated. Being a team player will automatically create a family atmosphere, and your patients will appreciate the pleasant work ambiance.

What profession, other than your own, would you like to attempt?

Mentoring and lecturing young dentists coming out of dental school. Over time, we develop techniques and different ways of approaching treatment planning, surgeries, etc. It is essential to share knowledge and experience.

What is the biggest obstacle or challenge you face today?

In Northern New Brunswick, we are facing the challenge of needing more dentists to serve the population. It’s becoming a challenge to manage the growing demand in dentistry. The staff faces a day-to-day challenge by doing acrobatics with the schedule to make sure that our patients in need are seen and relieved of their problems.

How do you measure success?

The success of a profession is measured by the time you invest in your employees and by the way you value, respect, treat, and motivate them. Your staff and their wellness, in my book, is 95% responsible for the success in your business. Working as a team, making sure that they are all treated the same, and letting them know that they all play a key role in your practice will make you remarkably successful and will make you stand out from your peers. I feel very strongly about this statement!

What is your favourite book (or movie) and why?

My favourite movies of all time are the Mission Impossible films. I love the high-action pack features combined with creative technology that the actors utilize to save the world! I love the calm and coolness of Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). It just brings out the kid in me.

What does a perfect day look like to you?

After a great night of sleep, I head to my office, answer a few emails, and start the day with our routine morning meeting with the staff to review the day’s schedule. Then, I start doing what I love the most, doing dentistry and making sure that all my patients receive the best care possible.
