Navigating the Intersection of Dentistry and the Fourth Industrial Revolution: A Multidimensional Approach

by Peter C. Fritz, BSc, DDS., FRCD(C), PhD (Perio), MBA, LLM.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) has ushered in an era of transformative technological advances that are rewriting the rules in almost every sphere, dentistry included. The real question for Canadian dentists is not whether to adopt but how to integrate these changes meaningfully into practice while being conscious of ethical and practical considerations. This edition of Oral Health features a multi-dimensional array of art, science, and nature in Periodontics.

Regarding diagnosis and treatment, AI-driven platforms like ChatGPT are increasingly becoming competent consultants for common dental issues. While these platforms may not replace the skills and experience of a seasoned clinician, they can provide quick diagnostic suggestions or even serve as educational tools for patients. These platforms, however, are not immune to cybersecurity threats. An unauthorized intrusion into a dental AI system could compromise patient data or manipulate diagnostic algorithms. Therefore, robust cybersecurity measures are imperative.

On the surgical front, microsurgery techniques are revolutionizing the field with an elegance that’s remarkably captured in the beautiful illustrations provided by Huang et al. – artistry that, notably, is not AI-generated. These hand-drawn images enhance our understanding of the nuanced procedures, offering a unique blend of scientific accuracy and aesthetic grace. They allow for a profound appreciation of the better visualization and precise instrumentation now available to dentists, contributing to less invasive and more efficient procedures.

Interestingly, 4IR also prompts us to revisit older medical disciplines in a new light. For instance, schizophrenia medications, typically not a focus in dental circles, are increasingly being studied for their impact on oral health. Could these medications, for example, be the missing link in treating some types of chronic orofacial pain?

The intersectionality of dentistry is not limited to just technology or pharmacology. Lifestyle factors also play a critical role. For example, explorer Adam Shoalts, whose oral health regimen during expeditions offers an exciting case study in minimalism and adaptability. His approach underlines the importance of primary oral care, often taking a backseat in discussions focused on high-tech solutions.

Nutrition is yet another overlooked dimension. Emerging research in this edition illustrates the role of 3G initiatives and dietary protein in oral well-being. This reinforces the idea that dentistry cannot be siloed as an isolated field; it is deeply interconnected with general health and wellness.

Lastly, but certainly not least, is the social angle. As online space becomes a part of our daily lives, combating Cyber-Libel is another unpaid role dentists face in the 4IR. Fortunately, legal experts are emerging in this field to help mitigate malicious attacks, as is highlighted in this edition.

In conclusion, the Fourth Industrial Revolution offered unprecedented opportunities and complex challenges for dentistry. As Canadian dental professionals, we should adopt a multidimensional approach, considering technological advances, ethical implications, and the interconnectedness of our field with broader health and societal issues. By doing so, we can ensure a future that is not just technologically advanced but also socially responsible and ethically sound.
