The why: Background story
As beautifully designed dental clinics emerge across the country, Dr. Erin Nowe has created something truly special—an environment where expert care, intentional design, and a deep sense of purpose come together. Being born and raised in Oakfield, Nova Scotia, Dr. Nowe decided to remain close to her roots by completing her dental school and periodontic training at Dalhousie University. As a mother of two young children who is married to an oral maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Nowe decided to pursue practice ownership as a way to enjoy greater life balance and control over her practice development. Bedford Periodontics happens to be an all-female team that mindfully supports their business-family’s need to balance parental responsibilities with their professional commitments. They have developed a workplace culture of empathy, flexibility and shared values, where every member of the team supports each other while warmly touching the lives of the people they serve.
The how: Strategic project planning
Transitioning from clinician to entrepreneur was exhilarating. Fortunately, Dr. Nowe had a foundation of great experience. For three years she practiced under the mentorship of her uncle, a seasoned practice owner who helped her develop strong clinical skills and business acumen. By Fall 2021, she was ready to build something of her own. She envisioned a location close to downtown Nova Scotia, yet accessible to surrounding communities. Amazingly, the perfect space came to be available on the 5th floor of Sunnyside Mall, which is filled with childhood memories. The 2800 sq/ft unit offered a rare blend of privacy and convenience. The lease followed a standard, non-negotiable structure that is not uncommon for corporate landlords in high demand locations. Despite the limited flexibility, Dr. Nowe felt the location and growth potential made it the right choice. The lease was finalized in just over a month. By January 2022 she began designing her vision and that November Bedford Periodontics officially opened its doors as a modern, welcoming practice, built with heart.
The results: Technical design features
Dr. Erin Nowe’s design journey began with a single, powerful image of a sunset over the ocean. She sent it to her design team as a guiding theme of deep blues, soft grays, and vibrant pinks. That warm, tranquil, and inviting mood now defines Bedford Periodontics. Determined to create a cozy yet functional space, Dr. Nowe faced a workflow challenge due to the clinic’s zig-zag layout stemming from a single entry and exit point at the front of the office. Careful planning was needed to manage the patient flow to avoid bottlenecks. In hindsight, she reflects that extra square footage for a separate staff entry point might have been beneficial. The treatment rooms were thoughtfully designed with dual access, allowing the clinical team to move seamlessly without disturbing patients. A spacious, welcoming staff room was created as a place for the team to gather for relaxation, planning, and for special social moments that strengthen their business-family culture.
The outcome: Practice success & community impact
Bedford Periodontics has quickly become a trusted name, thanks to an exceptional team and glowing referrals. The practice’s strategic location just outside of downtown Halifax allows it to more centrally serve the residential community, eliminating the need for lengthy commutes into downtown. The office’s “additional daily staffing” model ensures smooth operations and flexibility even when unexpected absences occur. This structure has created a supportive family-friendly work culture, allowing team members, many of whom are mothers, to balance their professional and parenting responsibilities. Bedford Periodontics is a practice that is rooted in passion, balance, and community. As the practice continues to thrive, Dr. Nowe looks forward to expanding its role as a community hub, welcoming more patients for treatment and hosting future study clubs for dental professionals.
