THE WHY: Background Story
Dr. Greg Dugas, the visionary behind “iSmile Orthodontists,” completed his specialty training in 2009 at the University of Toronto after five years of enjoying clinical practice as a general dentist. Fate would have it that just prior to graduation, a local equipment sales representative made him aware of an opportunity to purchase two well-established orthodontic practices. After three months of strategic reflection, he finally decided to seize the dual opportunity with confidence and excitement. Over the next decade, he deeply enjoyed serving the community and growing the practices right up until selling them both in 2020. After the sale of his two offices and with a sense of financial freedom, Dr. Dugas did not feel quite ready for full-time retirement. So driven by his entrepreneurial spirit and a taste for adventurous opportunities, he decided to design and build his dream orthodontic start-up practice, which opened its doors in November 2023.
THE HOW: Planning & Preparation
In November of 2021, Dr. Dugas’s business interests were inspired by Woodstock, Ontario’s growing population. At that time, he discovered a promising space while browsing realtor.com. However, it wasn’t until a very chilly, snowy January afternoon two months later that he and a trusted friend saw it in person, only to learn that a strong offer was already on the table. Faced with the reality of an existing conditional deal, he wished he had acted on this opportunity much sooner. Despite this setback, the space’s allure kept growing in his heart. One week later, fate smiled upon him when the realtor delivered the unexpected news that the initial deal had fallen through, granting him a second chance to purchase the space. Without hesitation, Dr. Dugas seized the opportunity. This start-up location represented much more than a real estate transaction; it provided a sanctuary for his vision to flourish by building something truly unique and impactful from scratch.
THE RESULTS: Technical Design Features
Nestled within a six-unit L-shaped plaza, the spacious practice spans 3700 sq/ft across the main level and basement combined. The main floor features seven dental chairs (two are consult rooms), a reception area, two washrooms, a lab, and a sterilization area. The basement contains a staff lunch/meeting room, ample storage, two washrooms, two private offices, and laundry facilities as well as a digital dentistry lab. The universal design concept is mindfully built to be warm, inviting, and accessible. This dental sanctuary resonates with visitors of all ages, fostering comfort and a smooth workflow for everyone in the office. Its sophisticated design blends sleek lines and minimalist elegance while enveloping visitors in a palette of pristine whites and subtle grays that exude a modern serenity vibe. Intricate ceiling details elevate the space, captivating the senses of all who enter with visual allure.
THE IMPACT: Empowered Practice Outcomes
Reflecting on his journey, Dr. Dugas’s advice to his peers would be to always aim for more space than you initially think you may need or want. With more space, his office can now accommodate advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment while providing ample room for patient comfort and privacy. The spacious office can house additional amenities such as consult rooms, private staff areas and washrooms, and ample storage facilities, all of which enhance efficiency and daily workflow. The journey to build something new and totally special has been truly incomparable. Everyone on the team feels proudly excited to welcome and serve quality orthodontic dental care from their beautifully designed new practice.
