THE WHY: Background Story
This month marks a jubilant celebration for Kids Corner, a vibrant pediatric medical and dental clinic in the heart of Oakville, Ontario. At the helm of this thriving practice stand two remarkable pediatric dentists, Dr. Laura Vertullo and Dr. Yili Wang. Their journey began as student acquaintances at the University of Toronto, a mere year apart in their specialty training. Post-graduation, the duo connected more personally through an introduction from their now husbands. After getting to know each other, they decided to team up as business partners rather than open separate clinics. Recognizing the strength of their synergies, they embarked on a collaborative, entrepreneurial venture to create a unique pediatric dental clinic. Their journey was about much more than simply establishing another practice. It was about crafting a unique vision for Kids Corner that encapsulates a well-respected, well-equipped, and well-rounded pediatric health haven for their community.
THE HOW: Planning & Preparation
After thoughtful planning, they compiled a detailed list of requirements for their new start-up clinic. The search for a suitable location began in the fall of 2019 and ended with them securing their location before the end of 2020. The space perfectly aligned with their vision of a ground-floor corner unit shell with large windows and room for growth. The ample parking, easy highway access, and sizeable new daycare opening nearby made it a compelling overall package. They initially envisioned a pediatric dentistry space of approximately 2000 sq/ft. Unfortunately, their landlord reluctantly let the unit go at that square/footage. After some reflection, they decided to pivot by reshaping Kid Corner’s business trajectory into a 4000 sq/ft space with the addition of an in-situ pediatric medical clinic. This expansion in size brought a range of medical services, from well-baby visits to primary care consultations, lactation support, tongue-tie assessments, and urgent pediatric dental and medical care.
THE RESULTS: Technical Design Features
Construction began in the spring of 2021 and was completed by the fall of 2022. The design combines a youthful vibrancy for the youngsters with a tranquil haven for parents. It blends Scandinavian-modern aesthetics with timeless elements of classic sophistication. Neutral tones, light woods, curved doorways, and cloud-like ceilings set the theme. Hand-painted murals that add pops of colour are artistically balanced with ambient lighting. The square-shaped office has a dental corridor on the right with seven operatories and a medical corridor on the left with four exam rooms connected by a central reception area at the entrance. This seamless blend of medical and dental health services extends into various shared spaces, including a spacious consultation room, private nursing lactation center, and accommodations for kids with disabilities.
THE IMPACT: Empowered Practice Outcomes
With a focus on preventive care, restorative treatments, and thoughtful accommodations for children with special needs, Kids Corner has emerged as a community pediatric healthcare center with a shared dental and medical commitment to comprehensive care. They enjoy hosting local daycare “field trips” that provide young children with stimulating experiences that foster a positive perception of healthcare visits. Everyone in the practice is excited to nurture the little ones into healthier, happier, and more wellness-minded future generations of adults. This dental practice story is woven with friendship, collaboration, and an unwavering pursuit of a shared vision.
