THE WHY: Background Story
Nestled in the vibrant heart of downtown Toronto, Sunset Dental Clinic is a testament to the vision and dedication of Dr. Sanaz Valadi. Her professional journey began after graduating dental school from the esteemed University of Tehran. For the next 13 years she owned a successful practice in Iran, where she honed her clinical skills while building a reputation for excellence. In 2014, Dr. Valadi came to Canada with her husband and son, seeking new opportunities. She was thrilled to pass her licencing exam on the first attempt. This opened the door for her to continue her career as a dentist in Canada. After practising briefly as an associate, she was excited to pursue her entrepreneurial dream of building a practice that fully represents her values, tastes, and interests. With the support of her husband, Reza Vahidian, who is an accomplished engineer and construction company owner, they designed and built their first practice that opened its doors in 2017. Inspired by its success, they recently opened their second practice (featured here) in 2023.
THE HOW: Planning & Preparation
In 2022, Dr. Valadi and her husband embarked on a strategic search for a suitable second location that has great visibility and accessibility. By January 2023, they had purchased a space and spent the next seven months on the internal construction process. The craftmanship and organization of their design and build team enabled them to open their doors by September of that year. They chose to be landlords, feeling that this allowed them more opportunity for financial growth as investors as well as flexibility for future expansion. The ground floor corner unit is located at the intersection of a busy pedestrian-traveled residential and commercial community. Having done very little external marketing, a nearby dog park turned out to be an asset that attracts a healthy flow of walk-in patients and referrals. The welcoming team chemistry coupled with a beautifully designed atmosphere has been the hallmark of their success.
THE RESULTS: Technical Design Features
They were originally tempted to fit five operatories into their 1400 sq/ft facility. Ultimately, they decided to go with a more spacious and comfortable four-operatory layout. Her private office is plumbed for a fifth operatory to accommodate for growth and expansion in the future. Realizing that there are a multitude of other options for dental care in the area, they seized the opportunity to stand out with their design. Inspired by the Dr. Valadi’s nickname “Sunny,” the overall design theme mimics golden sunset hues. Metallic gold finishes and pristine whites create a bespoke elegance. Curves and arches add to the tranquil patient experience. Smart glass walls in the operatories change from transparent to opaque with a flick of a switch, providing a blend of privacy with a feeling of bright openness when desired.
THE IMPACT: Empowered Practice Outcomes
Sunset Dental Clinic has witnessed the transformative impact of attracting patients by investing wholeheartedly in a beautiful facility. Similar to the pride one would take when designing the décor and comforts of their home, this practice inspires the team with an infectious pride to deliver the best possible dental healthcare experiences to their guests each day. Upon reflection, Dr. Valadi offers a reminder to aspiring entrepreneurs – that the best time to pursue your entrepreneurial dreams is now. She advises her peers to follow their dreams should they wish to build something special and extraordinary. Every aspect of the office, from the visual aesthetics to functionality, embodies a harmonious fusion of artistry and comfort in a smooth workflow configuration. Each day, they strive to be an extraordinary team that deeply touches the lives, health, and wellbeing of the people in their community.
