Women in Oral Health Care: Linda Anderson

by Linda Anderson, Adult Ed. CTP

What led to you working in the dental industry?

My career started in 1983 when my dentist-husband asked me to be his receptionist. I pivoted from interior designer to the director of first impressions of our practice.

Describe your journey to where you are today and the key steps that got you there.

The pivotal moment that took me to where I am today was realizing that I love and am passionate about training. Over the years, I worked in various offices as office manager and treatment and hygiene coordinator. The common element was my love of training the new hire employees. A health scare led me to leave the desk and launch a new career as a coach. In order to improve my skills, I enrolled into the adult education program at St FX University and then I became a certified training practitioner through the institute of performance and learning.

Today, I have the honour of facilitating the dental practice management course for UofT department of CE. I also travel across the country to work with dentists that want to improve their practice, develop their team, or train new hires. I also work with the brokerage Heaps and Doyle to support the new owners with their first days of ownership, improve a client practice before a sale, and to integrate associates into a successful career in a practice.

How do you keep a work/life balance?

Since I am as passionate about what I do, work life balance is not an issue for me. I thrive on living with my “why.” My why is “to motivate with energy and humour so that teams will be inspired to love what they do as much as I do.”

Can you share some information about your company’s initiatives to help support and encourage women entering or working within the dental industry?

As a company, we are very supportive of the women in our industry. The sales reps across the provinces are primarily female. With more than half of the dental student population being female, there is a demand for understanding their business from a family perspective to ownership. Many of them struggle with leadership, ownership issues, and time for their business. They are looking for work life balance as well.

Our brokerage works with each client to solve their unique problems as far a practice sale strategy, associate implementation, and business development.
