An auto mechanic has been given an eight-month conditional sentence with house arrest and must pay back nearly $30,000 after pretending to be a UBC dental student in order to get a student line of credit worth $350,000.
In 2019, the mechanic applied for the student line of credit from Royal Bank in Burnaby. This line of credit was only available to medical and dental students. He forged a letter saying he was enrolled in the UBC dental medicine program and received the line of credit.
He withdrew $30,000 before being charged with fraud and using a forged document three years later. The mechanic has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to “an eight-month conditional sentence with house arrest, 10 hours of community work and an order to pay RBC back $29,167.09,” reported Richmond News.
