A Calgary dentist has been charged for fraudulent dental insurance claims after an investigation that began in June.

The insurance provider reported the discrepancies to the police who found evidence of false billing totalling nearly $100,000 in fraudulent claims, reported The Calgary Herald.

The crimes affected 53 patients from the All About Family Dental office where Alena Vladimiro Smadych worked, over the course of about six years. The claims were regarding treatments such as fillings and root canals.

Dr. Smadych began her dentistry career in Russia but has been practising in Calgary since 2013. She has turned herself into the police and been arrested. She is set to appear in court today.
