CMS Revises Discharge Planning Requirements Rule

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced a final rule Sept. 25 that revises hospital discharge planning requirements for long-term care hospitals and similar facilities.

The rule includes removing a requirement for hospitals and critical access hospitals to provide routine and emergency dental care for swing-bed patients, which the ADA supported in 2018 comments to CMS. A swing-bed hospital is a hospital or critical access hospital participating in Medicare that has agency approval to provide post-hospital, skilled-nursing facility care and meets certain requirements through Medicare Part A.
