The University of Saskatchewan’s new Bachelor of Science in Dental Therapy program has launched to aid patients living in rural and remote areas of the province.

Dental therapists are trained to perform restorative dental treatment such as fillings, extractions and other preventive services,” reported paNOW.

The Prince Albert Campus Dental Clinic, which has been closed since last year to prepare for the new program, will open soon for patients. The program is also partnered with Northlands College in La Ronge, Saskatchewan Polytechnic and the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA), which will allow patients in northern and communities of Saskatchewan to receive better access to care.

The program will also improve access to oral health care for the Indigenous population in the province and there will be a focus on recruiting Indigenous students to develop their careers.
