Dentist in Sex-Abuse Case Hit With $4M Judgment

The oral surgeon accused of sexually assaulting sedated patients has not been formally charged yet in the criminal case, but he already has a $4 million civil judgment against him.

Michael Lee Hasson, 56, of Wrightsville Beach, was arrested Jan. 31, 2019, and charged with three counts of sexual battery. More were added in April and Hasson now faces at least 30 charges involving 23 patients, including misdemeanor sexual battery, felony second-degree forcible sex offense, felony indecent liberties with a child and statutory sexual offense with a person who is 15 years of age or younger.

Hasson, who operates Wilmington Oral Surgery, is out on bail but under house arrest. The court ordered that he cannot see patients and his state dental license was suspended last February. His next court appearance is March 9, but the district attorney’s office said it is an administrative hearing and a trial date would not be set until he is formally arraigned.
