Manitoba Dentist Removed from Board Following Offensive Residential School Comments

A recent report from CBC News reveals a civil court has ruled that the Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) “acted reasonably in removing a dentist from its board of directors who refused to sign an amended code of conduct, following comments he made about Indigenous people and the residential school system the board deemed offensive.”

After a February 2022 board meeting, the dentist made comments via email that were deemed offensive regarding the residential schools, and shared a video that suggested the graves of students at the Kamloops residential school were a hoax. The association found the content of the emails violated their principles and values, so they requested that the dentist resign as director. The dentist refused to resign.

The board amended their code of conduct to allow a member to be removed for acting against the best interests of the MDA. All members were required to sign the new code of conduct, which this dentist also refused to do.
