King’s College London researchers found a common drug for treating type 2 diabetes could be a new method for preventing oral and systemic disease.
The researchers from the Faculty of Dentistry, Oral & Craniofacial Sciences found Metformin could control inflammation and sugar levels in the mouth to stop gum disease. Additionally, it can protect against diabetes and obesity.
“The researchers found that Metformin led to significant prevention of bone-loss during induced periodontal disease and age-related bone-loss in vivo (in living mice),” reported King’s College London.
Metformin is available globally and non-expensive, allowing it to potentially be a way to help many people have better oral and overall health.
