A thesis at the University of Gothenburg shows having surgical obesity treatment tends to cause a higher chance of developing dental caries and general decline in oral health.

Participants with BMIs of over 40 were studied before and after they underwent treatment for severe obesity, which included surgery or medical treatment.

Two years after the treatment, the data showed those who had the surgery went from an average of “15.0 caries lesions on the surface of the tooth enamel to 19.1. Within the group receiving medical treatment, however, enamel lesions had decreased,” reported University of Gothenburg.
